Stillness on the Water: The Kerala Backwaters

Canals, lagoons and early mornings — notes on travelling the backwaters with intention.

Kerala's backwaters are a network of lagoons, lakes and canals running parallel to the Arabian Sea coast. Places such as Alappuzha and Kumarakom are common starting points, and life there still moves at the speed of water.

Choosing a quieter way in

Houseboats are the best-known option, but smaller canoes can reach narrow canals where larger boats cannot go. An early morning outing often means cooler air and calmer water.

Travelling lightly

  • Ask operators how they handle waste and fuel, and favour those who answer clearly.
  • Keep voices and music low — the backwaters are someone's home.
  • Spend a night in a village stay rather than only on a boat.

As with any trip, check seasonal weather and current local guidance before booking.
