The Case for Reading Slowly

Why fewer books, read with attention, may change you more than a long list finished in a hurry.

An open book and a cup of tea beside a window at dawn

Reading challenges and yearly totals can quietly turn books into a scoreboard. Slow reading asks a different question: not how many, but how deeply.

Reading as attention

A book read slowly gives ideas time to connect with your own life. Pausing to underline, to reread a paragraph, or to put the book down and look out of the window is not a failure of focus — it is where understanding happens.

A simple ritual

  • Choose one book at a time and keep it somewhere you will see it.
  • Read for fifteen or twenty minutes without your phone in the room.
  • Keep a small notebook for one line that stayed with you each session.
  • Return to a favourite book once a year and notice what has changed — in you.

The goal is not to finish. It is to be a little different by the last page.
