Slow Travel in the Himalayan Foothills

Staying longer, moving less: a quieter way to experience India's mountain towns.

Slow travel is less a destination than a pace. Instead of covering many places in a week, you choose one and let it unfold — its morning sounds, its market days, the walk you take again because you liked it the first time.

Why the foothills suit it

The lower Himalaya across Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh hold many small hill towns and villages where walking is the natural way to get around. Rishikesh, on the Ganga, is widely known for its yoga ashrams; quieter stays can be found in smaller villages a little further from the main roads.

A few gentle principles

  • Stay at least four or five nights in one place.
  • Choose locally run homestays where you can, and ask your hosts about walks rather than sights.
  • Travel outside peak holiday weeks, and check road and weather advisories during the monsoon.
  • Leave one day each trip with nothing planned at all.

Conditions, routes and stays change often, so always confirm current details with local sources before you go.
